Block Paving

Block Paving

Block paving is a commonly used decorative method of paving. The main benefit of block paving bricks over other materials is that individual bricks can be lifted and replaced, which allows for remedial work to be carried out under the surface of the paving without leaving a lasting mark once the paving bricks have been replaced.

Typical areas of use would be for driveways, pavements, patios, town centres and more commonly in road surfacing.

Installing a block paving driveway will ensure that you have a driveway that is extremely long lasting as block paving is a great surface to use in a driveway.

Block paving offers you an elegant yet durable style of paving that you don’t get from other paving materials. It comes in many different colours and shapes allowing you to match your outdoor paving to your style of home.

Versatility of Block Paving

One of the biggest benefits of block paving is its versatility. Available in a range of styles and colours, you can completely customise it to improve the appearance of your home.

If you’re planning to sell your property in future, well-maintained off-street parking by using block paving to create a space at the front of your property is a great way to add value and increase your asking price.

Block Paving Materials

Block paving bricks are typically made of concrete or clay, though other composite materials are also used. The biggest difference is the way they are set hard, ready for use.

A clay brick has to be fired in a kiln to bake the brick hard. A concrete brick has to be allowed to set. Concrete paving bricks are porous and formed by mixing small stone hardcore, dyes, cement and sand and other materials.

Many block paving manufacturing methods now use recycled materials such as crushed glass and rubble.

How We Lay Block Paving

First, we check the area you’re paving is level and clear of debris. If necessary we make depressions for added drainage. Next, we calculate how many blocks you will need (allowing for wastage) and mark out an outline – this will help ensure that the blocks are laid in straight lines and even grain patterns.

We then mix sand and cement in a wheelbarrow, which is poured onto the area being laid, and screeded across the surface. We lay blocks in rows, checking for evenness with a spirit level throughout.

We then fill the gaps between the bricks with kiln-dried sand and use a brush to sweep it into place and checking that all joints are filled evenly.

Next, we compact the entire area with a hand tamper before giving it one final brush over with dry sand to remove any excess debris or dust. Finally, we apply sealant if necessary.
